Band Practice Two hours a day. Times will work around teacher in-service schedule |
Summer practices are for all band members.
The first session is June 2nd through 5th starting at 9a and ending at 11:30.
The second session is Aug 3rd through 21st starting at 8a and ending at 3p. The week of the 14th times will work around the teacher in-service schedule.
For safety and to keep you informed, Band Registration Forms (click on image at right) need to be filled out and turned in to the Band Office by Fri morning June 5th.
Also, before issuing the new uniforms, the Uniform Data sheet (another image at right) needs to be filled out and also turned in on the 5th.
In case you missed the June 5th deadline during early summer practice, the Uniform Data Sheet is at the right:
This year, uniforms will not be taken home. They will be stored at the band hall. Your assigned uniform will be issued before each performance and must be turned in afterward.
Whites, guantlets and Shako hats & plumes will only be issued for competition performances. We will still wear the "cowbow" hats for football games.
You can try on and finalize uniform assignments from 3—6p on the following days:
| Monday | August 10th | Seniors & Band Officers |
| Tuesday | August 11th | Juniors |
| Wednesday | August 12th | Sophomores |
| Thursday | August 13th | Freshman |
| Friday | August 14th | if necessary |
... and all the time!

Google will ask you to sign in.
You must be a member of the email group and have (or create) a Google account that matches the email address you are receiving band emails (generally one you gave us on the band registration form turned into the band office).
The Hays Band Boosters is a parent organization. It is neither part of nor sanctioned by Hays CISD.
Names and trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
As can be seen above, our Band Directors wear a lot of "hats" (and shirts) and do a lot of duties above and beyond the norm.
While they occasionally have some fun, they also run a marching band from August through December including a few contests thrown in, which quickly converts to a festive holiday season (in between football play-off games), followed by concert season including Solo and Ensemble contests. During all this, they are conducting their own bands, helping out bands on other Hays CISD campuses, outfitting and painting trailers, putting on acts for the students' enjoyment at lock-ins, playing janitor (just ask Mr. Huston what happens when someone gets overheated then gulps too much water), and coordinating the end-of-school-year band picnic.
And they keep the boosters informed along the way by attending the monthly booster meetings.
And they can cook some mean hamburgers and hotdogs.

Which sometimes gets the attention of onlookers ... including the San Marcos police!

Who
The Hays Band Boosters is a volunteer organization made up of band students' parents and relatives.
There are no dues, and there are plenty of ways to express your skills, strengths, creativity and helpfulness.
The Hays Band Boosters is most active at the High School level, but fundraising for the travel accounts should begin at the middle school level. Annually there are out-of-town competitions and a spring fun trip. There is a major trip every four years and if it happens to be during your student's freshman year, you want a head start on the travel account.
What
The major activities in support of the bands include fund-raising, prop building,
pit crew, uniform check-out/in and management, trailer maintenance,
coordinating and hosting special events such as regional try-outs, cheering them on, chaperoning, helping out the directors, etc.
When
The Boosters regularly meet every 4th Monday at 7pm in (or near watch for signs on the doors) the band hall.
We do not have regular meetings in May, June, July or Dec.
Back When
And if you were in band yourself, don't think you know it all.
It changes all the time, with competition pushing the bar ever higher!
(That keeps it interesting!)

Besides other special-event fund-raisers, HEB Gift Cards provide a way for boosters to raise their students' travel account funds year round.
Your student(s) get 5% of the face value of the card put directly into their travel account. You (or the siblings away at college, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, neighbors...) get the full face value of the card.
Buy a $100 card for $100 cash/check, $5 goes in the student's travel account, and you get to spend the full $100 at HEB! The cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 denominations. Keep in mind that unless your kids drive a gas-thrifty car, they may look at you funny when you give them a $25 card to go "fill up".
Here's another way to look at it. If you spend $1000 a month in groceries, gas and pharmacy items, your student gets $50 in the travel account, or $600 a year. If the grandparents or other relatives spend similar amounts, your travel account could be in great shape for upcoming trips.
The cards can be swiped at the cashier at any HEB store anywhere: HEB, HEBplus!, Central Market, HEB Pharmacy, HEB Gas Station
Check here to find an HEB near you or a relative or friend.
The Hays Band Boosters Organization thanks HEB for offering this program!
The HEB Gift Cards are available in $25, $50, and $100 denominations. Besides the list below, you can get them at the monthly booster meetings, under the stands at football games, and at other band functions.
The following boosters are available near you to purchase HEB Gift Cards and record the benefit for your student:

Results of UIL Marching Contest, 16-Oct-2007:
All Ones from Every Judge!
|
The Hays Rebel Band earned a first division rating at the UIL Region 18 Marching Contest which was held on October 16th at Burger Stadium in Austin. This is the 25th year in a row that Hays HS has received this top rating in UIL competition. Judges for this event were Bill Watson from Richland HS, Brian Merrill from Southern Methodist University and Dana Pradervand from Judson HS. Pradervand said of the band, “Very creative show — strong fundamentals exhibited in every section.” Watson’s comments included, “Great sounds throughout the ensemble… strong individual fundamentals. Great, Bravo!” Merrill said, “You really play well, Bravo!! Great marching skills, super effort by students.” Students and directors have already begun working toward the next level of competition which will be held on Saturday, October 27 right here at Bob Shelton Stadium. This will be the “Area” round of UIL competition which includes bands from the Waco, Austin, New Braunfels and San Antonio regions. There will be approximately 20-25 schools competing for the right to be certified to the State Marching Contest which will be held in the Alamodome in San Antonio on November 6. |
Senior band member Angela Macias says, “I think we are well prepared for the competition and I am very excited! I think we’re going to do great!” Head director Tony Gibbs agrees, “The students have done a tremendous job preparing this very demanding marching show and they will be ready to go by contest time. I feel certain that we will be able to compete at the very highest level. It’s been a great year so far and we’re looking forward to what lies ahead.” The Rebel Band marching show is entitled, “Watercolors” and features excerpts from Handel’s “Water Music”, portions of Michael Daugherty’s symphonic work “Niagara”, “The Water is Wide”, a very old traditional melody and a jazzy rendition of “Up the Lazy River.” Students began preparing this music and marching show in early August. The marching contest season is the culmination of efforts to perfect this show and compete with other schools for the right to be named State Champion. |

The Booster Organization's primary way of getting out timely Band information is through email distribution lists. The lists are run for the benefit of the band directors, the booster organization itself, and most importantly the parents of the band members.
While most info distributed by email will appear (later) on haysbands.org, last-minute changes before games, contests, concerts, fundraisers, etc demand that we use the more timely aspect of email.
The Hays Band Booster Organization currently runs the following email distribution lists:
| Hays Band Boosters Email Distribution Lists | ||||

The primary way of getting on one or more of the lists is by putting your email address on the band registration form passed out to students during summer band or the first day of school. You may put more than one email address on the form so that your receive emails at home or work or on your mobile device, and add family members.
If you are already on the list, you may add additional email addresses by sending email to the email coordinator (see "Boosters" page).
If you are not on the list, please send email with your students name, which school and band, and the director's name for verification.
When you are added to a list you will receive an "invitation" from the email coordinator which contains a link to accept the invitation. The link will also give you the option of creating a Google account which you can do at that time or later. Having a Google account lets you review past email messages and merge the Band Calendar into your own personal Google calendar.
Emails from lists in the above table will have the following in the "From:" line (for example):
Hays-Band-Boosters-Members@googlegroups.com on behalf of (real sender's name and email)
The majority of emails will come from the booster president or middle school representative in their role of supporting the directors. However all directors from all three campuses can send to all the band email lists, so if you see a director's name on the "From:" line you know it is urgent.
The subject field will contain a prefix, such as HaysBand, so that you can easily set up rules to flag the message. Knowing the sender and subject prefix also allows configuring spam filters to let the message pass.
For all groups (except the officers group), replies are only sent to the original sender. The email distribution lists are not set up as forums and can only be used by the Hays Band Boosters president, the band directors, middle school reps, and (rarely) the email coordinator. This keeps the volume of email low, puts the responsibility on the original sender to collect feedback and issue further information, and prevents email "storms".
If you have "misplaced" an email, all messages are archived for your convenience. See the links in the above table. To view the archives you must have signed up for a Google account by assigning a password of your choice for your email address. (You do not have to have or create a GMail address, no matter how much Google pleads.)
As hard as the booster volunteers work, there are just some things we need help with. The fine folks at the following companies have helped us TREMENDOUSLY and get our heart-felt thanks!

At the beginning of each school year, students have a "clean slate" and are eligible to participate in extracurricular activities -- band performances for this explanation.
After the first six-weeks grading period, UIL rules enforcment comes into play.
If a band student has failed any class at the end of a six-week grading period, they are ineligible to participate in all band performances and contests (e.g., football game half-time performances, concerts and contests).
They may (and are expected to) rehearse with the band during their ineligibility.
Students may re-establish eligibilty one week after the next three-week progress reporting period by having passing progress grades in all classes. (In other words, there is a 7 day waiting period after showing passing progress grades before they are again eligible.)
For more information see the UIL Academic Eligibility Policy and Protect Your Eligibility. The Hays CISD school year calendar is here for six-week grading periods.
