Roxanne Vickers
Email: [email protected] Roxanne Vickers is a retired Band Director with 30 years of education experience and an experienced UIL and USB Judge. Ms. Vickers received her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) University. During her time at SWT, she was also a member of the Jazz Ensemble, which performed at the Kentucky Jazz Festival, UT Jazz Festival, and Notre Dame Jazz Festival. She traveled to Europe to perform at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Throughout her college career, she was also a member of the Sea World Jazz Band and performed and recorded with several big bands including John Mills, James Polk, Doug Skinner, and Keith Winking. Ms. Vickers had the privilege of student teaching at Hays High School under Gerald Babbitt and supervisor John Stansbury. She began her teaching career at Austin ISD and remained there for 2 years. She then moved on to Lockhart ISD where she remained for 12 years in which she was the Director of Bands for the district as well as the High School Head Band Director. While under her direction the band in Lockhart earned their first sweepstakes award in 37 years and continued to receive sweepstakes throughout her stay. During her time with the Lockhart Band, they were featured in 3 major films (1998- The Faculty, 2003 Screen Door Jesus, and 2007- Stop Loss). Her career then brought her back to her hometown of San Antonio where she was the first woman to be hired as a Director of Bands at the high school level for SAISD at Thomas Jefferson High School. During her time at Thomas Jefferson the band received consecutive sweepstakes awards and came in first place at the Battle of Flowers Parade and Flambeau Parade. Her band was also named as a Feature band her last year for the Battle of Flowers Band Festival. The band also had 6 all-state band members during her stay there. Ms. Vickers's wind ensemble also submitted a tape, which was chosen and won a Grammy in the school award for the fine arts program. Ms. Vickers had an opportunity to open a new school and was hired at NISD as the first woman director of bands at a high school level at William J. Brennan High School. During her time at Brennan, the band received consecutive sweepstakes awards, along with several Colorguard achievements as well as in the Percussion areas. We had the pleasure of having all-state band members. The Band came in first at the Battle of Flowers Parade and was chosen as the feature band in 2012 for the Battle of Flowers Band Festival. In the fall of 2013, the Brennan marching band made it to the state level and performed at the UIL 4A State Marching Contest at the Alamodome. Ms. Vickers was hired at KISD as the first woman director of bands at a high school level. At Tivy High School. Where again she was the first woman to be hired as a Director of Bands. While in Kerrville she created a Community Jazz Band for the citizens of Kerrville to participate alongside several of the high school students from Tivy High School. During her time at Tivy, the band received consecutive sweepstakes awards, along with several Colorguard achievements. In the fall of 2019, the Tivy marching band made it to the state level and performed at the UIL 5A State Marching Contest at the Alamodome. Ms. Vickers professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association. Ms. Vickers has been a UIL judge for the last 18 years. |
